The following update is from the Oakland Police Department....

Seven persons suffered fatal gunshot wounds, and three others were wounded in a shooting located at 7850 Edgewater Drive, Oakland, Ca. The suspect is in custody.

At 10:33 a.m., the Oakland Police Department received a 9-1-1 call regarding a woman on the ground, bleeding. Patrol units were dispatched at 10:34 a.m.

The first Oakland Police patrol officer arrived at 10:36 a.m., and located a victim suffering from an apparent life-threatening gunshot wound amidst an extremely chaotic scene. Additional calls regarding multiple victims were received. Officers established a perimeter around the building in use by Oikos University. The suspect was initially believed to be within the building when officers arrived.

Oikos University is a post-secondary vocational school with strong ties to the Korean community and Korean students.

Believing potential victims were inside the building, either trapped by a locked, exterior door, or unable to evacuate due to injury, Oakland Police and Oakland Unified School Police gained access to the building by breaking an exterior window. They coordinated an emergency evacuation, searched for any injured persons, and searched for any suspect on-scene. Officers extracted a total of 13 individuals, some of whom were critically injured.

As the evacuation occurred, the preliminary investigation led to the identity of the suspect and his description. Within an hour and a half, investigators were in possession of the suspect’s name and photo. Officers were dispatched to his home and the residence of a local relative in an attempt to locate him. The suspect, 43-year-old One L. Goh, an apparent Oakland resident, surrendered approximately five miles from the scene to Alameda Police Department officers in a grocery store within their city. He is currently in the custody of the Oakland Police Department.

A total of 10 victims in all were shot. Seven of these victims succumbed to their injuries – five were pronounced at the scene, and two victims later died after transport to hospital.

At a 6:00 p.m. press conference held at Oakland police headquarters, Chief of Police Howard A. Jordan acknowledged the heroic response and actions of his personnel and other first responders. In addition to available Oakland police officers, Oakland firefighters, and paramedics, nineteen officers from local law enforcement agencies responded to the Department’s request for assistance in cordoning and handling the scene.

“Today’s unprecedented tragedy was shocking and senseless,” said Chief Jordan. “Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims, their families, and their friends; I offer my deepest condolences. No words can express the gravity of these crimes and the pain caused by them.”

A crisis line and services are available for affected community members through Alameda County Behavioral Health Care, 510-567-8109
